Once-Weekly Interval Walking Reduced Body Fat, Study Finds

New research found that 75 minutes of supervised interval walking, completed in one weekly session, reduced body fat and waist size in adults with central obesity. The sessions were carefully supervised, so the details matter.

New research suggests that fitting 75 minutes of brisk interval walking into one day may help some adults reduce body fat and waist size. The workouts were carefully supervised, however, so the finding is more specific than it first appears.

Researchers randomly assigned 315 Chinese adults with overweight and central obesity to one of three groups for 16 weeks. Two groups completed the same weekly dose: 75 minutes of individualized treadmill interval training. One group completed three 25-minute bouts on a single day, with breaks between bouts. The other completed one 25-minute bout on three separate days. A third group received general health information but no supervised training program.

Both schedules reduced total fat mass, body-fat percentage and waist circumference compared with the group that did not train. The three-day schedule produced the larger improvement in aerobic fitness, but the once-weekly schedule still produced measurable changes.

What Once-Weekly Interval Walking Actually Meant

The phrase “once-weekly interval walking” can create the impression of a single relaxed stroll. That is not what researchers tested.

Participants alternated four minutes of brisk treadmill work with three minutes of active recovery. Across the week, they completed 12 brisk intervals. The once-weekly group performed three 25-minute bouts on one day, separated by recovery periods. The three-times-weekly group performed one 25-minute bout on three different days.

Intensity was individualized and supervised. Trainers monitored heart rate and adjusted treadmill speed and incline. In practical terms, this was walking-based interval training with a high-intensity target, not a low-effort walk around the neighborhood.

What the Research Found

After 16 weeks, both exercise groups had lost more total fat mass than the control group. The adjusted difference was 0.8 kilograms for the once-weekly schedule and 1.0 kilogram for the three-times-weekly schedule.

Both groups also improved body-fat percentage, waist circumference and cardiorespiratory fitness. The three-times-weekly group recorded the larger aerobic-fitness gain, suggesting that training frequency may still matter when the goal is to build cardiovascular capacity.

Researchers reported no study-related adverse events. That is reassuring, but it should be interpreted within the supervised setting. Participants were screened, workouts were tailored and trained staff were present.

At the 32-week follow-up, reductions in waist circumference remained evident. Differences in body weight and total fat mass were no longer statistically significant, underscoring a familiar point in fitness research: a short intervention can produce change, but maintaining it usually depends on what happens after the formal program ends.

The study did not show that one easy walk a week melts belly fat. It showed that a concentrated, supervised dose of interval training can work.

Why the One-Day Schedule Matters

Exercise guidelines often focus on total weekly volume. Real life is often governed by scheduling friction. Commuting, caregiving, unpredictable work hours and limited access to facilities can make three or more structured sessions difficult.

This study tested a practical question: if the weekly dose stays the same, can adults concentrate it into fewer days and still benefit?

For body composition and waist size, the answer in this study was yes. That does not prove that one day is optimal for every outcome. It does suggest that frequency can be flexible when time is the barrier and the total dose is appropriate.

That distinction could be useful for coaches designing programs around clients’ actual lives. A schedule that is theoretically perfect but consistently missed is less valuable than a well-designed session a person can complete.

What the Study Did Not Prove

The study was conducted at a single center in Chinese adults with central obesity. The findings should not automatically be generalized to trained athletes, older adults with significant medical conditions, people without central obesity or anyone exercising without supervision.

The intervention also did not produce broad changes in every health marker. Blood pressure, fasting glucose and standard blood lipids were essentially unchanged. Participants began with relatively normal values in several of those measures, which may have limited how much change was possible.

Most importantly, the result is not a license to compress an entire week of strenuous exercise into one exhausting session without preparation. Individualized intensity, progressive loading and recovery remain essential.

People who are sedentary, have cardiovascular or metabolic disease, experience chest pain or dizziness, or take medications that affect heart rate should speak with a qualified clinician before beginning high-intensity interval training.

How to Apply the Finding Without Overreaching

For a healthy adult who already walks regularly, the study supports a simple principle: intervals can make walking more demanding without requiring running. A practical session might alternate purposeful brisk work with easier recovery, while keeping technique and breathing under control.

That does not mean copying the research protocol immediately. The participants completed supervised treadmill sessions built around individualized targets. A safer starting point may use shorter brisk intervals, longer recovery periods and a lower total volume.

Progress can come from gradually increasing walking speed, incline, interval duration or total time, not from pushing every variable at once.

Strength training remains important as well. Walking-based intervals can support aerobic fitness and energy expenditure, but they do not replace progressive resistance training for muscle, bone and long-term physical capacity.

How This Fits With Current Fitness Guidance

Major public-health guidelines recommend accumulating aerobic activity across the week, alongside muscle-strengthening work. This trial does not replace that guidance. It adds a narrow piece of evidence about how one specific interval dose can be distributed.
