58 Years in the Trenches: How John DeFendis Built UltraFit by Putting People Before Profits

By Daniel Ford
Managing Editor, Fitness Living Magazine

From Personal Crisis to Fitness Mission

How Saving His Mother’s Life Became the Mission Behind UltraFit

A deeper look at the philosophy, discipline, and culture that have helped thousands transform their health.

John DeFendis, Founder & Director of UltraFit in Greenville, South Carolina

For nearly six decades, John DeFendis has helped people transform their bodies and reclaim their health. But the mission behind UltraFit didn’t start in a gym.

It started with a son determined to save his mother’s life.

Quick Facts: John DeFendis

  • IFBB Pro Mr. USA Champion

  • Founder of UltraFit (1982)

  • Fitness Hall of Fame Inductee

  • Personal Training Hall of Fame Inductee

  • Bodybuilding Hall of Fame Inductee

  • Recipient of the National Health Advocate Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Member of the Board of Directors and President’s Council of the ISSA

When Fitness Became a Mission

At 16 years old, John DeFendis wasn’t thinking about building a business.

He was trying to save his mother’s life.

She weighed over 320 pounds and had suffered multiple heart attacks — one requiring a helicopter airlift. Doctors had her on a tray full of medications, and the future looked uncertain.

John had already developed a deep connection with fitness. Inspired by his father and old-school bodybuilding legends, he began lifting weights at age 10.

By 13, he was training twice a day and writing one goal in a black-and-white notebook:

I will be Mr. America.

But when his mother’s health spiraled, bodybuilding stopped being about trophies.

It became about survival.

“I realized God gave me the ability and the knowledge to help the woman who gave me life. It was never money-driven. It was about how many people we can help.”
— John DeFendis

Between ages 16 and 18, John placed his mother on a structured training and nutrition program.

Within two years she lost 180 pounds — dropping from 320 to 140.

She came off medications and regained her life.

Today she is 92 and will turn 93 this June.

That experience became the foundation for everything that followed.

Built in the Trenches, Not the Boardroom

This is John’s 58th year of training. He started lifting weights at age 10 and will turn 68 this year.

Since founding UltraFit in 1982, he has trained over 750 trainers and helped tens of thousands of people transform their health.

Despite decades of growth, the philosophy has never changed: Care first. Results follow.

“The problem with many gyms is they focus on growing the business first. Do the right thing. Take care of people. The business will grow itself.”
— John DeFendis

The TEAM System

The UltraFit program is built around what DeFendis calls the TEAM concept:

Training
Education
Accountability
Motivation

Training focuses on progressive strength development rather than endless cardio.

“Muscle is your fat-burning engine.”
— John DeFendis

Workouts minimize rest between sets, allowing clients to build strength while improving cardiovascular fitness in one focused hour.

Nutrition guidance is simple and practical.

Clients receive clear food choices, portions, and recipes without complicated macro tracking.

Accountability ensures consistency.

“We don’t want you to lose a session,” DeFendis explains.
“We want you to get results.”

Motivation follows early success.

Many participants lose 10–15 pounds within the first two weeks, creating powerful momentum.

Typical clients lose 20–35 pounds in six to eight weeks, and more than 1,000 individuals have each lost over 100 pounds through the program.

Culture Over Convenience

DeFendis is outspoken about what he sees in today’s fitness industry.

“You don’t fight obesity with pizza nights and candy jars. You fight it with accountability, belief, and people who genuinely care.”
— John DeFendis

Watching his mother struggle with obesity shaped his standards for how a fitness program should operate.

At UltraFit, culture matters just as much as programming.

Members receive structure, accountability, and direct access to their coaches — including DeFendis himself, who still gives clients his personal phone number.

“People don’t care what you’ve accomplished,” he says.

“They care how you treat them.”

The Hardest Part: Finding Trainers Who Care

For DeFendis, the biggest challenge in the fitness industry isn’t competition.

It’s culture.

“Certifications are everywhere,” he says.
“Passion is not.”

Many of UltraFit’s strongest trainers began as clients themselves — individuals who lost 50, 80, or even 100 pounds and decided to help others do the same.

They understand the fear of starting and the power of persistence.

“You’re not a failure unless you quit. As long as you're still in the game, you haven’t failed.”
— John DeFendis

A Legacy Bigger Than Business

At 13, DeFendis wrote that he would become Mr. America.

He later achieved that goal, earning the title of Mr. USA as an IFBB Pro.

But trophies are not what define his legacy.

The real measure of success is the thousands of lives changed.

The parents who avoided early death.
The individuals who regained confidence.
The families who found hope again.

He describes the motivation behind it all simply:

“My mother, my passion, my mission.”
— John DeFendis

At 68, John DeFendis is still training, still mentoring, and still protecting the culture he built more than four decades ago.

After 58 years in the trenches, his philosophy remains simple:

Care deeply.
Hold people accountable.
Deliver real results.
And never let someone quit on themselves.

That isn’t marketing.

It’s a life’s work.

The UltraFit Philosophy

At UltraFit, transformation is built on four pillars.

Training
Progressive strength training designed to build muscle and accelerate fat loss.

Education
Clear, simple nutrition guidance.

Accountability
Consistent coaching and structured sessions.

Motivation
Early results that build belief and momentum.

Together these elements create the TEAM system that has helped thousands transform their health.
