From Firefighter to Gym Owner: How Anthony Mazz Built a Strong Community Through Fitness
Anthony Mazz’s journey from New York City firefighter to gym owner is a story of strength, recovery, and leadership. Today, as the co-owner of CrossFit Myrtle Beach, he runs more than just a gym. He has built a place where people feel welcome, supported, and connected.
A New Chapter After the Fire Department
Anthony worked for 24 years with the New York City Fire Department. His career ended sooner than he expected after he developed cancers linked to his service at the World Trade Center.
“I had to retire earlier than expected due to a couple different cancers from the World Trade Center,” Anthony says. “When I relocated here, I was in a bad place physically and mentally.”
During that difficult time, fitness helped him heal.
“Working out has always been something that I enjoyed,” he says. “It makes you kind of feel good when you’re done with it.”
Exercise gave him strength, confidence, and hope. Over time, it also gave him a new purpose - opening a gym and helping others improve their lives.
Why Resilience Matters in Business
Starting and running a gym is not easy. Anthony believes success comes from showing up every day, even when things are hard.
“It’s about showing up when things are tough, pushing through, and inspiring that same spirit in others,” he explains.
His experience as a firefighter taught him discipline, teamwork, and commitment. He now uses those same skills to lead his gym.
For Anthony, fitness is more than exercise. It is about helping people grow stronger - both physically and mentally.
Building a Gym That Feels Like Home
Anthony and his business partner, Dionne, wanted their gym to feel different from large, impersonal fitness centers. They focused on building real relationships.
"An opportunity arose with my business partner, Dionne, and we decided this was going to be the move for us."
“Everyone who walks into this gym has a story,” Anthony says. “When you start learning about each other, then you truly become that community.”
They even created a café-style lounge inside the gym where members can sit, talk, and relax before or after workouts.
“That room is what keeps people coming,” Anthony explains.
The goal is simple: make people feel like they belong.
Standing Out in a Competitive Market
Myrtle Beach has many fitness centers. Anthony understands that people have choices.
The gym stays active on social media by sharing member stories, photos, and updates. While Anthony is not personally focused on social media, he knows it helps spread the word about what makes their gym special.
Still, he believes community is the real reason people stay.
Equipment and convenience may attract new members. But friendships and support keep them coming back.
Serving All Ages and Fitness Levels
CrossFit Myrtle Beach welcomes members from their early 20s to their 70s. Workouts can be adjusted so everyone can take part safely and successfully.
“You and I may have different capacities,” Anthony says, “but we get to the end feeling the same - we gave it all we got.”
The gym focuses on helping young athletes improve performance and older adults build strength and stay healthy. This wide range helps the business grow in a steady and lasting way.
The Importance of the Right Team
Anthony believes that hiring the right coaches is one of the most important parts of running a gym.
“Building the right team will attract the right members,” he says. “It’s a special place, and I can’t reiterate that enough.”
He is careful about growing too quickly. Adding more classes or members only works if the gym can still give everyone personal attention. Keeping a strong community feeling is always the priority.
Improving the Member Experience
Anthony has also invested in upgrading the gym space. Fresh paint, new equipment, and comfortable gathering areas have made a big difference.
When members see that the owners care about the space, they feel valued. That positive energy spreads throughout the gym.
Happy members are more likely to stay and invite friends.
Lessons for Future Gym Owners
Anthony’s story offers clear advice for anyone who wants to start a fitness business:
Focus on building a strong community.
Hire a team that shares your values.
Use social media to show your gym’s personality.
Make workouts flexible so everyone can participate.
Keep improving the space and member experience.
A Place to Connect
For Anthony, the gym is more than a workplace. It is a space where people connect and support each other.
“This is a place to come and connect,” he says. “When you walk in that door, you will meet people from all walks of life.”
His journey shows that strength is not only about lifting weights. It is about overcoming challenges, helping others, and building something meaningful.
In the end, Anthony Mazz did not just open a gym. He created a community built on resilience, service, and heart.
Members Find Meaningful Connections That Last: A Real Account of Community
Real results are best illustrated through the lived experiences of those who have been impacted by the community-centric leadership model. One member, Telvin Armour, exemplifies how the approach at CrossFit Myrtle Beach changes more than just fitness habits.
I joined this gym a couple of years ago and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in life. Yes, I’m able to walk through the doors and know I’m going to be challenged physically in a healthy way at an elite level by well trained coaches and staff but that’s not what keeps me coming back. It’s the community and culture that CrossFit Myrtle Beach has that keeps me connected. Both the staff and members have become like family to me. Making the choice to show up and do something hard that ultimately benefits you physically... Show more
Experiences like these show how strong leadership can shape a supportive and welcoming environment. As Telvin explains, joining a space like this is not just about improving your health. It is about finding encouragement that stays with you during both hard times and successes. When community is at the center, people grow in ways that go far beyond physical fitness.
Redefining Success: The Power of Purposeful Fitness Leadership
The story of Anthony Mazz and CrossFit Myrtle Beach shows that the future of fitness is about more than building strong bodies. It is about building strong communities. When leaders focus on accountability, positivity, and personal support, the results reach far beyond the gym.
This kind of leadership connects members to a network of encouragement. It creates real friendships and gives people the confidence to face challenges in their daily lives.
Today, many people want more from their fitness experience. They want connection, support, and meaning. Leaders like Anthony Mazz set an example by caring about both the physical and social sides of training. Their approach leaves a lasting mark — not only on members, but on the fitness industry as a whole.
In the end, strong and thoughtful leadership builds more than stronger athletes. It builds a resilient, connected community that lasts.
