Myrtle Beach Gym Builds Community Through Fitness and Support

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - In a growing city filled with new businesses and national fitness chains, one locally owned gym is drawing attention for a different reason: community. Core Fitness & CrossFit UpDog is building lasting relationships with members by focusing on support, accountability and personal connection, Feb. 26, 2026.

Owner Shannon McDaniel said the goal is simple but powerful.

“We want this to be your third place — home, work and gym,” McDaniel said. “When people walk through our doors, we want them to feel like they belong.”

A Local Vision for Long-term Health

McDaniel’s background in fitness began early. As a former competitive gymnast, she spent much of her life training and competing. Years later, she and her husband turned their passion into business, purchasing a struggling gym in Charleston and rebuilding it into a successful operation.

When the opportunity came to return to Myrtle Beach and take over Core Fitness, they saw a chance to create something lasting for the local community.

“We saw Core Fitness as what gyms should be,” McDaniel said. “Not just equipment and workouts, but a place where lives change.”

Since taking ownership, McDaniel has focused on building a welcoming atmosphere. Staff members greet regulars by name. Coaches check in about progress. Small group classes encourage people to build friendships while working toward their goals.

“It’s not about packing the building,” she said. “It’s about knowing our people.”

More Than Just Machines

Core Fitness offers a wide range of workout options under one roof. Members can use traditional weight machines and cardio equipment, attend CrossFit classes, join spin sessions, train in Pilates or work with personal trainers.

This setup allows people of all fitness levels to work out together while still following their own plans.

The gym serves:

  • Beginners starting their first fitness routine

  • Competitive CrossFit athletes

  • Adults focused on strength training

  • Seniors working on balance and mobility

  • Core Fitness currently offers CrossFit Kids Camps, with plans to introduce additional youth classes in the future.

McDaniel said senior fitness is especially important in a coastal community with a growing retiree population.

“Strength training helps seniors stay independent,” she said. “It improves balance, protects bones and keeps them active longer.”

Parents have responded positively to Core Fitness’s CrossFit Kids Camps, which focus on building strength, coordination, and confidence in a fun and supportive environment.

Helping Members Through Hard Seasons

Many people struggle to stay consistent with exercise. Busy work schedules, family responsibilities and health challenges can make it difficult.

Instead of canceling memberships when attendance drops, McDaniel said staff reach out to offer support.

“We meet members where they are,” she said. “If someone is going through a tough time, we ask how we can help instead of letting them disappear.”

Members often say they stay because they feel supported, not pressured.

“It’s not like you’re just a number here,” McDaniel said. “You’re part of a family.”

Nutrition: The Next Focus

While attendance remains steady, McDaniel believes nutrition education is the next step in helping members reach their goals.

“You can’t out-train a bad diet,” she said. “Some people work really hard in the gym but don’t understand what their body needs.”

The gym plans to expand nutrition coaching, including education about protein intake and balanced meals. Leaders are also exploring partnerships with local medical and wellness providers to better support members using weight-loss medications, helping them maintain muscle and overall strength.

McDaniel said fitness should be about long-term health, not quick fixes.

“We want people strong and healthy for life,” she said.

Growing Deeper, Not Bigger

As Myrtle Beach continues to grow, Core Fitness is choosing a steady path. Instead of focusing only on increasing membership numbers, McDaniel said the goal is to build stronger connections with current members.

“We want our membership to grow deep, not broad,” she said.

Word of mouth remains the gym’s main source of new members. Friends invite friends. Families work out together. Coaches celebrate milestones alongside members.

McDaniel describes the gym’s personality as dependable.
“We’re not flashy,” she said. “We just show up every day for our people.”

The Complete Guide to Running a Youth-Focused Athletic Training Gym

Redline Athletics Mount Pleasant 📍 Address: 3400 Turgot Ln, Mt Pleasant, SC 29466, USA 📞 Phone: +1 843-396-2595 🌐 Website: https://redlineathletics.com/ ★★★★★ Rating: 4.9 Mount Pleasant Facility Highlights Blueprint for Serving Youth AthletesMOUNT PLEASANT — Running a youth athletic training gym requires more than equipment and open turf. It demands community trust, consistent leadership and a long-term vision for growth. At Redline Athletics Mount Pleasant, Ryan Stulgin, Director of Business Development, believes the foundation of athletic development begins with relationships. As youth sports participation continues to expand across Mount Pleasant and the surrounding Lowcountry, families are increasingly seeking structured, safe environments where young athletes can build strength, speed and confidence.Operating a youth-focused training facility, however, comes with its challenges.According to Stulgin, long-term success in this space depends on five core principles: a clearly defined mission, a positive training culture, intentional programming, strong community partnerships and disciplined business planning.Clear Mission Drives PerformanceAt the center of the model is a youth-first philosophy. The heart of any youth gym must be about kids - not just profits,” Stulgin said. “Building self-confidence in youth athletes and teaching them how to train the right way is what matters most. Athletes at the Mount Pleasant facility typically begin with a free trial class. During that initial session, coaches observe movement, balance, strength and flexibility to determine how the athlete fits within the structured training program. From there, participants join age-appropriate group sessions designed to support both beginners and advanced competitors preparing for higher levels of play. The objective remains straightforward: help young athletes move more efficiently, grow stronger and develop confidence that extends beyond the field.Positive Culture Reinforces DevelopmentCreating a successful youth-focused training environment requires more than structured workouts - it requires a consistent and intentional culture. At Redline Athletics Mount Pleasant, leadership emphasizes accountability, encouragement and steady guidance as daily standards rather than occasional goals.“Consistency, caring and accountability guide how we lead our team,” Stulgin said.Coaches make a deliberate effort to learn each athlete’s name, understand individual goals and stay aware of school and sports schedules. Classes are designed to balance structure with energy, creating an environment where young athletes feel both challenged and supported. Competition is encouraged, but respect remains a central expectation.Parents in Mount Pleasant cite that atmosphere as a key reason they continue enrolling their children in the program, noting that the training environment extends beyond physical development to character growth.Engagement Keeps Athletes CommittedSustaining participation among youth athletes often depends on maintaining interest and enthusiasm.Rather than relying on repetitive drills, Redline Athletics incorporates friendly competitions and game-based challenges into its sessions. The approach is designed to keep athletes engaged while reinforcing proper technique and measurable progress.By blending structure with creativity, the facility aims to ensure that training remains both effective and enjoyable - a combination that families say contributes to long-term commitment. “Our classes feel more like games than chores,” - Ryan That approach has led to noticeable improvements in agility, strength and confidence, according to families.Navigating Seasonal Growth ChallengesLike many youth-focused training facilities in Mount Pleasant, Redline Athletics experiences fluctuations tied closely to school sports calendars.Participation levels often shift throughout the year, reflecting the natural rhythm of youth athletics. During busy spring and summer sports seasons, attendance can decline as athletes prioritize team commitments and travel schedules. In contrast, winter months typically bring increased participation as families seek structured indoor conditioning options. To address these seasonal swings, the facility has focused on long-term stability rather than short-term spikes.Leadership has implemented year-round marketing efforts and introduced flexible programming options designed to accommodate changing schedules. In-season strength sessions and shorter-duration programs allow athletes to continue training without overwhelming already packed calendars.According to Stulgin, that adaptability plays a critical role in maintaining steady membership and supporting more predictable revenue throughout the year.Expanding Awareness in a Growing MarketEven in a rapidly expanding community like Mount Pleasant, specialized youth athletic training can remain under the radar for some families.Leadership at Redline Athletics recognizes that visibility is an ongoing challenge. To increase awareness, the facility has prioritized community partnerships and local outreach as central growth strategies. The gym is actively building relationships with area schools, recreation leagues and club teams. Coaches regularly visit practices and offer sport-specific training sessions designed to complement team development.“Building relationships with local sports organizations is key to growing our impact,” said Ryan Stulgin, Director of Business Development. The goal is simple: strengthen community ties while generating greater awareness and referrals through trusted local networks.Addressing Scheduling DemandsModern youth athletes often balance demanding schedules that include school responsibilities, competitive games, travel teams and family commitments. To accommodate those pressures, Redline Athletics is exploring flexible solutions aimed at increasing accessibility. Leadership is evaluating expanded class times throughout the week and mobile training options that bring structured sessions directly to team practice locations. The objective is to reduce scheduling barriers, encourage higher participation and create a more manageable experience for families.Planning for Long-Term SustainabilityWhile daily operations focus on athlete development, long-term success requires broader strategic planning. At Redline Athletics Mount Pleasant, sustainable growth is driven by steady outreach, consistent service standards and strong communication with parents.“It doesn’t matter what sport you play or your skill level,” Stulgin said. “Your attitude and effort are what matter most.”That philosophy has helped position the facility as more than a training center. Within the Mount Pleasant community, it has developed a reputation as a supportive resource for families navigating youth athletics. Why It Matters LocallyYouth sports remain deeply embedded in the culture of Mount Pleasant. From soccer and baseball to lacrosse and volleyball, families invest substantial time and resources into athletic development.Facilities such as Redline Athletics provide structured strength and conditioning programs that many school teams cannot consistently offer due to limited staffing, funding or scheduling constraints. For parents, access to a youth-focused training environment centered on safety and performance provides reassurance. For athletes, it builds confidence both on and off the field. For Stulgin, the mission extends beyond performance metrics.“If we take care of the kids and families here in Mount Pleasant,” he said, “the growth will follow.”Community Validation: Parents Share Success Stories from Youth Athletic TrainingAmong the strongest endorsements of the youth-focused athletic training gym model are firsthand accounts from families who’ve witnessed meaningful change. Consider the perspective of one parent, whose review captures the value of personalized coaching and community: Awesome training staff. You can tell by watching them that they have professional experience with top athletes. My 10-year-old son Michael has been going there since they opened 5 months ago. In that short amount of time he has built up his speed and strength so much that he’s excelling in lacrosse and basketball. He’s more confident and loves how the trainers will push him and challenge him. He also likes training with all the other kids close to his age who are at all different levels of fitness. For the busy parent that doesn’t have the time to train your kids for fitness or sports this is the perfect place. They even have an upper level lounge space for the parents so you can watch your kid’s progress. No other place like this in the area. Worth a look. Families Report Impact Beyond AthleticsParents across Mount Pleasant say the benefits of structured youth training extend well beyond measurable gains in speed or strength.Families describe noticeable improvements in confidence, discipline and teamwork after enrolling their children in performance-focused programs. For many, the progress becomes evident not only during competition, but also in the classroom and at home.As similar stories continue to circulate throughout the community, interest in structured youth athletic development has grown steadily. Supporters point to those firsthand experiences as evidence of the impact well-designed programs can have when led by experienced coaches and built specifically for developing athletes both physically and mentally. For parents evaluating training options, those outcomes serve as practical examples of how the right environment can produce lasting, positive change.Elevating the Standard: Why Youth-Focused Training Matters More Than EverYouth sports have become increasingly competitive - and increasingly year-round - placing greater physical and mental demands on young athletes.Coaches expect improved conditioning. Teams expect accelerated development. Parents seek safe, structured ways to support performance while reducing injury risk.In response, youth-focused athletic training facilities have emerged as an important community resource in towns like Mount Pleasant. These programs are intentionally designed for developing athletes, combining age-appropriate strength training, injury prevention education and character development within a single framework.Local coaches report that athletes who participate in structured strength and conditioning programs often return to their teams better prepared, both physically and mentally. At Redline Athletics Mount Pleasant, programming centers on measurable progress, sport-specific development and leadership training. Coaches prioritize fundamentals, safe technique and accountability - principles intended to serve athletes beyond competition.Supporters note that the broader impact extends beyond individual performance. Comprehensive training programs can contribute to reduced injury rates, stronger team cohesion and deeper community connections as families gather in goal-oriented, supportive environments. As Mount Pleasant continues to expand and youth athletics remain central to family life, facilities dedicated to safe, structured athletic development are playing a growing role. For parents and coaches focused on sustained progress rather than short-term gains, purpose-built youth training programs may offer a meaningful advantage both on and off the field.Contact Redline Athletics Mount PleasantFamilies interested in learning more about youth athletic training opportunities can contact the team at Redline Athletics Mount Pleasant for additional information about programs and enrollment options.📍 Address: 3400 Turgot Ln, Mt Pleasant, SC 29466, USA📞 Phone: +1 843-396-2595🌐 Website: https://redlineathletics. com/Redline Athletics Mount Pleasant Location and Hours🕒 Hours of Operation:📅 Monday: 3:30 PM – 8:30 PM📅 Tuesday: 3:30 PM – 8:30 PM📅 Wednesday: 3:30 PM – 8:30 PM📅 Thursday: 3:30 PM – 8:30 PM📅 Friday: 3:30 PM – 8:30 PM📅 Saturday: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM📅 Sunday: ❌ Closed

The gym was created to bridge the gap between highly equipped military training spaces and the everyday needs of Columbia’s residents and workforce—a mission reflected in its impressive 20,500 square feet of workout space, diverse selection of equipment, and inclusive policies. The vision was clear: offer an accessible oasis for self-improvement that honored the structure and community values carried by those who serve, while also opening its doors to civilians and family members.
